"This is the story of my first time going bikepacking alone.."
Ever since I got my Brompton, I’ve always wanted to go out and explore more. After doing a group overnighter two weeks ago, I realized .. maybe I can actually do this by myself.
So… I decided to try..
Another reason why I did this was because I was preparing for a bigger solo trip on the Velo Dunajec, so I wanted to do a small test run. That is why I decided to go bikepack in Virgin Lake since it is only around 15 km from my home.
This lake is actually belongs to the huge forest. I use to go cycling here and climb the lokout tower. yes, there is a lookout tower around this area.
Some people camp there sometimes in the weekend, but it’s usually pretty quiet. Perfect for a newbie like me, very perfect for what I needed.
I went straight after work and picked a spot near a little lake inside the forest. Honestly, I had a very simple plan:
- Set up camp
- make a fire
- sleep
- and hopefully make it home alive
Easy enough.
Things I bring.
- Quilt from Cumulus
- 1 person cycling tent from Naturehike
- Sleeping pad with 5.6 R Value from Naturehike
- foldable pillow - Aeros
- Spare outfits for the night
- 2 pack of chicken sausages
- Sleeping liner
- Hot water
- Wind blocker Jacket
- headlamp
- wet tissue
The things I brought were pretty basic but enough for an overnighter.
The only thing I was afraid of was… what if I feel cold? What if I get hungry? What if my water runs out?
But I decided to just go for it anyway.
The Night.
Making a campfire was hilarious. The wood was super wet and took me almost an hour to get burning. I almost gave up, but somehow it worked in the end.
After the fire died down, it was already dark, and I had nothing else to do, so I went to sleep around 10 pm. Of course, my brain had other ideas. I meant, I kept thinking things like:
- What if someone steal my bike?
- What if there are ghosts?
- What if it rains the whole night?
- yada yada yada
But that’s part of going alone, I guess — getting used to your own thoughts.
And honestly, the night was amazing.
It rained a little, and the sound of raindrops on my tent felt like ASMR — super calming. I was still a bit scared of everything, but the atmosphere made it worth it.
The Morning.
I woke up to birds singing, unzipped my tent, and boom — beautiful lake, green forest, total peace. That moment alone made the whole trip worth it.
Overall, it was really fun. I’m honestly proud that I survived a night alone in the forest. Any concerns or fears I had were probably just because I was overthinking. I didn’t feel cold, didn’t get hungry, and didn’t even run out of water, lol.
And yes — I made it back home happy. I was like ...
"Dude, you made it!."
